Inside Black Coffee’s Penthouse In Johannesburg

In early 2022, Grammy award winning DJ Black Coffee teamed up with South Africa’s most awarded interior architect, Tristan du Plessis, to redesign his penthouse in Johannesburg’s Hallmark House Hotel.

Some of Du Plessis’s work include SĀN in Dubai, Hyde Park restaurant Kol Izakhaya, and Tang, Sandton.

“Black Coffee and I have a shared passion for design and a friendship that has grown from that, the penthouse suite was aimed to be representative of the African dream in a contemporary context, and there was no better person to collaborate with than Black Coffee,”

Du Plessis

The collaboration between the two was bolstered by flooring from MOOOI x African ginger, the inclusion of artwork by Nelson Makomo in the lobby, and also soft furnishings by MaXhosa.

Hallmark House Hotel was originally built in the 1970s, redeveloped in late 2016, closed for a year because of covid-19, and reopened again in 2021. Black Coffee’s penthouse suite redesign was officially launched in September after the renovation process.
