As countries around the world looks to green solutions to reduce the devastating impact of climate change, Hive Hydrogen SA are paving the way to a sustainable future by developing innovative green ammonia projects.

Backed by Hive Energy and Built Africa, Hive Ammonia South Africa has been operating since September 2019. Hive Ammonia are establishing 5 large scale Hydrogen and Ammonia plants in the country, powered by 15GW of renewable energy.

In 2021, the company announced the establishment of a $4.6 billion Green Ammonia Plant which will have a dedicated power supply at the Coega Special Economic Zone, alongside the Port of Ngqura.
There is a massive demand for ammonia globally in order to meet current chemical, agricultural, and mining requirements. Furthermore, Green Ammonia is set to become the chosen fuel in the maritime industry. Because of the changes in the renewable energy sector, now seems like the perfect time to invest in this commodity.
Southern Africa is one of a few countries in the world with favourable conditions for green hydrogen and ammonia production and export. It has world-class renewable resources, good harbours, as well as a high standard of local skills. With that said, it is the ideal location for green hydrogen and green ammonia plants.
The plant is based in Nelson Mandela Bay and will produce over 780 000 tons of green ammonia a year. In turn, the Green ammonia produced in SA will be exported to world markets including the far East, Europe, and the USA.
The project will be transformative for the Nelson Mandela Bay area by creating over 20 000 jobs(direct and indirect), this will help reduce the unemployment rate, which is currently over 50% in the Eastern Cape. Subsequently, this will also reduce crime and alleviate poverty.
